Marriage in Cana

MEMORY VERSE:

“This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”
(John 2:11)

TEXT: John 2:1-11

Some people assumed that this wonderful event that took place in Cana of Galilee was a regular event that always happens in everyday life of humanity. On the other hand, the miracle relating to the event is noteworthy, but if we can pay attention to details, the Lord will inspire us and will also instruct us in His spiritual wisdom relating to this event.

Jesus Christ was specifically invited. It was not a question of following His earthly parents, Joseph and Mary to the occasion. All the people that the honor of marriage invitation is extended to were invited to witness the transition of the individualism of each of the two opposite sex to that moment when the two shall become one–a married couple. The invitee will witness the consent of the parents that their son and daughter should marry. They will also witness their wedding vows before they are pronounced as husband and wife. Jesus Christ, the Son of Living God as one of the invitee, is holy, and He honored the invitation to witness the holy institution He had ordained at the beginning. Genesis 2:18; Proverbs 18:22

If we do not have this remarkable event that established the example that believers should follow in the Bible, some can even argue that there is no express commandment that one should lay the foundation of holy institution of marriage on Christ’s righteousness. Psalm 37:5-6 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

Today in our time marriage had been redefined to include an unholy union between a man and another man, and a woman and another woman. Unfortunately the government of the day approved the unholy relationship as legal and many embraced it as part of civilization. But the challenging question for everyone is that, “Can Jesus be invited to witness the union between man and another man or a woman and another woman? The answer is obviously No! If an event is not holy, and cannot give glory to God, the Holy Son of God will not be a part to it.

Praises be unto God, because in the passage we read, the truth about marriage had been revealed unto us, and the truth will make us free, in Jesus name.

MARRIAGE INVITATION TO CHRIST–John 2:2

What motivated Jesus Christ to attend the Marriage ceremony? Think about several invitations that Jesus Christ turned down. John 6:15; Luke 12:13-14 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? Therefore Jesus Christ attendance in the event was a big deal. He did not come alone, He came with His disciples.

Marriage is an institution that God ordained in His infinite wisdom between a man and a woman. The parties involves wants God to be glorified in their affairs.

God is interested in the affairs of the family of the two parties in this glorious relationship, because, the husband and the wife are the two human angels appointed over their family to entrench the law of God in the family and inculcate the fear of God into their children.

In every marital relationship, there are always three personalities. In the believer’s marital relationship, God is the invisible true head of the family, watching over their affairs. Eph. 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. In other marital relationships of the world, the worldliness is the only visible head of the family. The earlier every couple understands this fact the better. Ensure that worldliness is unplugged from your family and sincerely invite Christ into your family. Let Him have a permanent seat in your family for glorious purpose of the institution. Wherever Jesus is, the Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit is there.

DIVINE NEEDS ARISE IN THE MARITAL RELATIONSHIP–John 2:3

The obvious things that always usher in marriage relationship is the joyful festive ceremony. For this reason, people that come to witness the occasion will be supplied with food and drinks. In the process of the festive mood in the marriage in Cana of Galilee, one of the festive items of the ceremonies ran dry. The wine ran dry. Wine is a symbol of joy–Psalm 104:15 “And wine that maketh glad the heart of man…” But by divine intervention, Jesus Christ came to rescue.

This is the major reason why right-thinking believers should invite Jesus Christ to their marital relationship, not only at the beginning but throughout the rest of the lives of the couple. When there is no joy in the family, chaos and sorrow will take over. Spiritual repairs may be needed in the family. When a car needs a repair, the best approach, take it to the manufacturer–Garage. Certainly the resources in the marriage will surely run dry one day, you will certainly need God to come to the rescue in the family.

• Beauty will run dry one day and old age will set in,
but if Christ is in the marriage, the joy in the family will remain fresh.
• Peace may become elusive, and a scarce commodity in the family,
but if the Prince of Peace in the marriage, all will be well. Isaiah 9:6
• In the period of sickness in the family, Jesus Christ will provide the Balm of Gelead. He is the Lord that healeth thee Exo 15:26
• In the period of scarcity and famine in the family,
Jehovah Jireh, the Lord that Provideth with supply their needs. Phil 4:19
• In the days of external battle against the family,
The Mighty Warrior, Who never lost a battle will defend your family Zech. 10:5
• Children in the family may be attracted to the pressure of the world,

The Mighty Shepherd will lead the flock of family back home. Micah 7:14 NLT “O LORD, protect your people with your shepherd’s staff; lead your flock, your special possession. “

That is why you must lay the foundation of your marital relationship with the presence of Jesus Christ in the family. We should look intently at the miracle and behold the revelation of God.

DIVINE PROVISION ARE MET IN THE MARITAL RELATIONSHIP— John 2:3-5

Two important ingredient of receiving divine provision in the Marriage of Cana of Galilee were precepts of asking and obedience.

Matthew 7:7-8 ” “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Isaiah 1:19 “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land” Within the instruction of Mary to the servants you will also notice the admonition of faith.

Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” That was why she said, “Whatever he told you, do it.”

Mary was speaking about her son that she knew very well. She knew Jesus Christ as someone that is full of mercy and compassion and He is able to do all things. Do you know your God? Daniel 11:32 ” … but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”

One of the things that always get attention of our Heavenly Father is the unity of His children. Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Most of the time, we always think this is only applicable in the church or Christian gatherings. It is equally applicable between the believing husband and his wife. When a couple holds each other’s hand in agreement and in one accord crying unto Abba Father, touching any issue in their family, the mercy of God, who instituted the institution of marriage will surely prevail in the matter. Matthew 18:19 “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.”

Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring
