Ostrich is one of the largest birds that we know in our time. It is one of the flightless bird. Its wingspan is about 200 centimeter and the adult ostrich has a sustaining speed of 50 kilometer per hour. It scientific name is Struthio Camelus. It height ranges from 210-280 centimeter with an average weight of about 100 kilogram.
In the powerful mysterious interrogation of God with Job, God spoke volume about this bird and we can learn from it.
“The ostrich flaps her wings grandly, but they are no match for the feathers of the stork. She lays her eggs on top of the earth, letting them be warmed in the dust. She doesn’t worry that a foot might crush them or a wild animal might destroy them. She is harsh toward her young, as if they were not her own. She doesn’t care if they die. For God has deprived her of wisdom. He has given her no understanding. But whenever she jumps up to run, she passes the swiftest horse with its rider.” Job 39:13-18
The scripture talked about how this bird flaps her wings with pride obviously a negative characteristic of human being. The bible tells us in Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” This wingless bird is endowed with strength and can swiftly run faster than horses. But unfortunately, when she lays her eggs, she does not make provision for comfortable nest for its offspring. She just lay the egg on the surface of the earth, does not even worry whether someone may crush them or animal destroy them. Furthermore when its eggs are finally hatched, she treats her offspring harshly as if she is not their mothers.
Wondering why this unusual behaviors manifests in the life of this bird, it is simply that God did not endow her with wisdom and understanding. At times we do not always appreciate what God had given us. When we learn what other people or other creatures around us do not have we see the reason why we should be full of appreciation of the mercy and love of God in our lives. The scripture tells us in Psalm 111:10 that, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments.” God had bestowed His grace towards man and encourage us in James 1:5 to ask for wisdom and understanding if we lack this importance ability. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
If today, you notice that this rare grace of spiritual wisdom and understanding is lacking in your life and you do not seek the face of God for this important blessing, it means you are operating in the spirit of ostrich. Our strength, intelect, skills and various abilities that we have can not carry us far enough if they are not applied in the glorious wisdom of God. Let us start from the basic–the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom–wisdom 101!
Prayer: O Lord endow me with your wisdom so that I can apply my life into your righteousness and efficiently live my life in holiness and for the glory of God, in Jesus name, Amen.
