“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light” Ephesians 5:8 “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” (Ephesians 5:20-21)
Apostle Paul, an inspired man of God was in a deep dialogue with the children of God that were translated from the darkness of the world into the marvelous light of the Kingdom of God in this passage. Reading through the passage will provide us with enlightened understanding of the inspired wisdom of God towards the believers in Ephesus. The man of God finally rounded up his ministration with a statement that they should submit one to another in the fear of God. While still on the topic of submission of one to another in the fear of God, Apostle Paul branched into the institution of marriage that God established to drive home the point among the believers.
Paul saw the important need of submitting one to another in the fear of God because cordiality of family union is the pattern that God expects in our relationship with Him. God is the invisible head of each unit of families all over the world. Any family that recognized this and honor God and provide room for His leadership in the family will surely experience the mercy, grace and divine touch of God in their relationship.
Once again, the relationship between husband and wife was never the idea of man. It came into existence in the abundant wisdom of God. Adam did not know the meaning of loneliness when he was daily tending the garden in the Garden of Eden. It was in the thoughtfulness of God that He said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” (Genesis 2:18) God did not mold another clay from the ground to make Mrs Adam. He simply took one rib bones from Adam and used it to create Eve. This is to ensure compatibility in their relationship as husband and wife. The help meet that God created for Adam was mutually compatible in every way to Adam and His needs. Adam responded compatibly in mutually affectionate relationship with Eve His wife. The test of their compatibility manifested when God brought Eve to Adam. “And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:23) Relating this verse with the topic under consideration, you will now appreciate the inspired wisdom of God in the ministry of Apostle Paul advising brethren, the children of light to submit one to another in the fear of God.
Today some people read the admonition of Paul selfishly according to their motives. Husband would quote to his wife, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord,” (Ephesians 5:22) as if this is the only sole responsibility of a woman to submit herself to her husband. The wife will also quote to her husband, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it,” (Ephesians 5:25) as if this is the only responsibility of the husband to love his wife. Whereas, submission and love in this context simply means dealing humbly with each other in mutual compatibility and that the two individuals that had become one should be conscious of the fact that their relationship will be verified by God who is the invisible head of each family. This simply means the law of God should be the final authority in all things in their relationship. The couple that honor God in their family will not experience dishonor in their relationship. We all can change and sincerely submit one to another in our relationship with our spouse in the fear of God. The time has come that God must be honor in our homes.
Prayer: O Lord, grant me the grace to come down from my high horse in humility so that I can give the due honor unto God in my family and totally submit myself to my spouse in the fear of God according to God’s word, in Jesus name, Amen.
