Thirty pieces of silver was not a lot of money in our today’s monetary units. It was so valuable in the mind of Judas Iscariot that he exchanged his sweet relationship with Jesus Christ in betrayal for the value of the silver. It was so valuable to Judas that he traded in his eternity of rest with the Lord in heaven for the pieces of silver that cannot stand the test of time.
One of the factors why man fell into sin is an unwise decision of apportioning greater value and preference to worldly and sinful craving at the costly expenses of our righteousness and holiness. When this type of transaction takes place, we are not in any way better than Judas Iscariot who exchanged his eternity for thirty pieces of silver. Unfortunately, Judas did not take into consideration the pertinent question of Jesus Christ when He said, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:36-37) From the days of Esau who traded his birthright for a plate of pottage of lentils humanity have been living a life of foolishness that leads them to stray away into the world of sinfulness. “And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he swore unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.” (Genesis 25:20-33) Esau despised his birthright, sold his God given blessing cheap, and he never regained it.
The valuable items that can overwhelmingly sway your decision making may not be thirty pieces of silver or plate of pottage; it may be a piece of dishonest gain, it may be strong delusional lustfulness that manifest in the love of money, fame, inordinate affection, power, position and other mundane things that come along with catalogue of corruptions of worldliness. All these may lead you to dip your immaculately clean garment in to the mud of sin and thereby made you to completely lost in the ocean of sinfulness.
To Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, their own valuable ‘pieces of silver’ was the combination of long-throat for food, lust of eyes and quest for wisdom that led them to discard and trade away a pleasant and cordial relationship with the Creator of Heaven and earth. “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” (Genesis 3:6)
Today the grace of God had been extended to you to please endeavor to look inward into your heart today and identify that “valuable pieces of silver,” I mean that secret cravings, that tend to lure your mind to perdition and chain your mind to worldliness. The scripture tell us that the besetting works of the flesh are manifesting in “adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:19-21) Your salvation is priceless; do not trade it off for worldliness. Your sonship adoption in the Lord that was purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ that comprises of the DNA of Holy Spirit on the Cross is invaluable; please do not waste the grace of salvation. Your precious mansion in eternity is priceless and the angels are waiting to usher you in; please do not exchange it for worldly gain that perishes with time. Cling unto Jesus today and do not allow the world of flesh to separate you from the prepared eternity in His presence. Be wiser!
Prayer: O Lord, thank you for the grace of salvation. I pray this day that you may stabilize my relationship with you and endow me with wisdom to jealously guide this relationship and never trade it for the things that perishes with life in Jesus name, Amen.
