A Great Gulf as described by the scripture is an impassable chasm. It is another word to describe a bottomless pit. It will be unthinkable or suicidal to dare step into the gulf. No right thinking person tries to come near it. To shed more light on this, the gulf was intended to demarcate Heaven and Hell. In Luke 16:26 the scripture says, “… there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.” NLT The righteous children of God like Abraham and other saints could be beholding people languishing in Hell on the other side and might have desired to assist them in response to the request of the rich man to Lazarus. But the possibility of the saints to render this kind assistance to the inhabitants of Hell became practically impossible because of the great gulf fixed that demarcated the Heaven and Hell.
The scripture also talk about the narrow way that leads to the Heaven as well as the broad way that leads to hell. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14 NIV) This is one of the valuable information in the scripture that clearly guided man the right way to Heaven. The wide and the broad way is the popular way that multitude are following in this world. It is the way to various atrocities and wickedness. It is the way to self-centeredness and unguided utterances of arrogance and pride that leads to chaos and rancor in our societies. It is the way of the ungodly people who refused to recognize the lordship of Almighty God over all His creatures. It is the way of those that are doing overtime thronging towards hell fire. Therefore cautiousness and sensitivity to the impulses of Holy Spirit is required to be able to locate the narrow way that leads to Heaven while we are still here on earth. The scripture will surely guide us if we are humble enough to obey the commandment of the precepts of truth of the word of God.
Glory be to God because Jesus Christ has come to the rescue of man. He said in the book of John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus Christ is the way to that narrow way that leads to Heaven. He is the only avenue through which we can reach the Heavenly Father. He is the bridge of Salvation that spanned over the great gulf and landed in the presence of the Living God. The truly wise men passed through ‘Bridge’ Jesus Christ to locate the narrow way. They were able to make it to bosom of Abraham. You can make it as well. Begin with clean hands and pure hearts as you approach the presence of the Heavenly Father. Endeavor to straighten up your crooked ways in repentance as you are trying to navigate the pathway to your heaven while you are still here on earth. Take the advantage of the grace of God and sum up courage by reconciling with Jesus Christ in genuine repentance and embrace the salvation that is perfectly customized for you. I can bet it, you cannot miss Heaven when you make a right turn to the Mercy Avenue. Our Heavenly Father will be waiting at the Gate to receive you with opened arms.
Prayer: There is a highway for me on the bridge of your mercy over the great gulf. O Lord grant me humility and repentant heart to walk through this bridge to my salvation in Jesus name, Amen.
