The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and are safe. (Proverbs 18:10)
It is important to take note of something that seems insignificant. A name of a person is one of the things that we always fail to recon with because most of the time we do think, “It is just a name.” And that is it. Name generally is more than the way we take it lightly. A name is usually an unappreciated miracle that happens to man. Before a name is given to a newly born child, when the child is in the womb, the would-be parents of the child must have secretly conceived the name in their mind, and must have seriously considered the name in line with a specific history in the life of the family. The name might have come into existence as a result of specific situation in the life of the parent that deserved the symbolization of the name to glorify God Almighty. Christian parent must have prayed about the name and locked it in their hearts as a secret only to be made known openly when the baby is born and at the point of his naming. The very moment any of the parents write out or speaks out the name of the child, whether in the hospital or in a naming ceremony gathering, mystery is released into the life of the child.
Again an important thing to note about name is that, anyone that has power to give name to anything whether living thing or non-living possesses authority and control over the thing. When a couple gives name to their child, the couple possesses the legal authority and spiritual authority over the child. They possess guardian authority over the child to direct his path in life according to the desire of the parent. The legal authority is interpreted that they are the biological parents and guardian of the child, verifiable by DNA analysis and spiritual authority as parental custodians that are responsible to guide the child up to adulthood and bring him up under the fear of Almighty God.
When we take a second look at the beginning of creation, in Genesis chapter one, we will see a certain pattern. Everything that God created He gave them names immediately. God created light and also created darkness. He called the light “Day” and called the darkness “Night.” He created firmament and called it “Heaven,” He created a vast collection of water and called it ‘Sea’ and He created land and called it Earth. He conceived thoughtfully and dialogued with the God-Head before man was created. When man was eventually created, he was created in the image of living God. Although man was classified in the category mammals called primates by the scientists, however God in His thoughtfulness separated man from animals at the beginning of creation. Man was the general name given to human beings. Although we do not know how the first man and the first woman came about the name ‘Adam’ and ‘Eve,’ but obviously we know that it came from God because man did not give himself a name. God blessed man. Man was the only creation that God blessed at creation. “Then God blessed them and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue; have dominion over the fish of the sea, other the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28) Most people do not understand the meaning of blessing. Blessing of God is a spoken word of the will (intentions) of God upon the life of the blessed that defines the function of the blessed person onward. God exercised His authority as our Creator to cause man to function according to His desire in spoken words of blessing upon the lives of Adam and Eve. It is important to note here that blessing is opposite of ‘curse.’ You also note that all the creations that God gave names are under direct control of the Living God till today. Man does not possess control over night and day, sun and moon, sea and the earth. Whatever the intelligence and wisdom of man may be we are still under the control of God because He created us and named us.
Before the creation of man, God said, “Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. (Genesis 1:20) and also He said to the Earth, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.” (Genesis 1:24) After the creation of man, God brought these creatures to man so that Adam may give them a name.
Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field… (Genesis 2:19-20)
When our spiritual eyes are opened we shall appreciate the wisdom of God in giving man the grace to give a name to every living creature under Heaven. We can also behold the faithfulness of God in this scenario in that, after God had given man dominion over all other creatures, he did not share the dominions with man by given names to all the creatures He put under the dominion of man. That was the reason why God brought the beast of the field and the bird of the air and other living creatures to Adam to name them. It takes the anointing of God upon Adam to be able to accomplish this great task by creating an identity for all the living creatures without duplicating the names and ability to remember what he called them at the beginning up to eternal existence of man on the surface of the earth.
A name can generally be regarded as an identity. The name of a person, place or thing is an identity that clearly designates the object or person. It is also a spiritual identity that our Creator and all His spiritual ministers recognize. The spiritual identity links you to all spiritual covenants and activities you are involved in whether it is righteous or not. The identity is attached to every good work or bad work that came through you on earth. When a man come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ and accepts the blood bought salvation, a great spiritual transaction takes place. A soul is wrested out of the clutches of Satan. The spiritual identity of the man is attached to his redemption. In the spiritual realm the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer is attached to our name as our last name in accordance to the 42nd generation principle. “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13) You are marked as precious generation. You are secured in the anointed name. As long as you are dwelling within the shelter of Almighty God, (Psalm 91) you are covered with the touch me not anointing of God. The eyes of God are on you. “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry.” (Psalm 34:15) The eyes of the evil forces are also on you because you become their envy. That is why they come with so many attacks (temptations and besetting sins) to bring you back into their evil bondage.
This is the name that Heaven would recognize in the register of the redeemed which is called the book of life. (Revelation 20:12,15) If the man backslides and eventually departs from faith like Dema, his name will be deleted from the book of life.
You will notice a pattern in the Bible, that the name of a man is paired with his father’s and/or his mother’s name in the Bible. When this happened among the servants of God it becomes the spiritual identity and spiritual address of the person. Most of the servants of the Most High God were clearly denoted this way.
Joshua the son of Nun (Numbers 14:6)
Caleb the son Jephunneh (Numbers 14:6)
Ezekiel the son of Buzi (Ezekiel 1:3)
Saul the son of Kish (Samuel 10:11, 21)
David the son of Jesse
Isaiah the son of Amoz (Isaiah 1:1)
Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah (Jeremiah 1:1)
It was stated that in the evil spiritual operations, the evil agents do not always concern themselves with the physical address of their victims; all they need is the name of the person and the name of his parents. When they call their victim’s name and parent’s name, the image of their victim will appear in the evil mirror or their evil altar, thereby giving the evil people an opportunity to do whatever they like with the life of their targeted victim. From there, they can launch their evil attack against their victim. Coincidentally, two or more people may be having the same first and last name but it is not likely that they were born by the same father and mother. If there is anything that worth to be guided jealously, the name of a person is one of the many things. If your name is not prayerfully in the safekeeping hollow of the hand of God in the spiritual realm, you are open to spiritual attack any moment.
It is a normal practice for people to change their names. However, at the end of the legal document that effects the name change, there is a legal qualification that reads, “all former documents remain valid.” When a man changes his name, the whole world may recognize the change, but it does not affect his spiritual identity and his spiritual destiny before God, because all former identities (both physical and spiritual) still remain valid. When the Lord changes the name of a person, his spiritual identity and his spiritual destiny is out rightly altered and permanently changed. It does not matter whether the people of the world recognize this change or not.
At the age of ninety, God reiterated His covenant with Abram and changed his spiritual destiny through a prophetic pronouncement: “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and unto thy seed after thee.” (Genesis 17:5-7) The same deft touch of the God was made upon the name of Sarai the wife of Abraham. Her name was changed to Sarah. “And God said unto Abraham, as for Sarai thy wife, thou shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.” (Genesis 17:15-16)
The combination of the name Abram and Serai in marriage resulted to unfruitful destiny. But when their spiritual identity changed their destinies also changed. The difference between Abram and Abraham is the change of spiritual destiny that heralds the unprecedented blessing of God. The covenant that he had with God was eventually sealed with an oath in which the Heavenly Father ascertained the completion of every term detailed in the covenant.
The name of Jacob the son of Isaac is widely known as ‘Supplanter.’ Everything unrighteous surrounded the name of Jacob because of the way he usurped the blessing meant for Esau, his twin brother, through deceit and collaboration of his mother, Rebecca. His name was changed when he encountered the heavenly host that said to him during the wrestle: “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel, for as a prince has thou power with God and with men and prevailed.” (Genesis 32:28) “And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him. And God said unto him, ‘Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called anymore Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.’ And God said unto him, ‘I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.’” (Genesis 35:9-11)
THE SECRET OF POWER FOR THE ELECTS
In every developmental relationship of God with His people He always reveal His name to them. From Abraham up to his generation in Goshen in the land of Egypt, the Lord was known to them as Almighty God.
And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of thy bondage. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them. (Exodus 2:23-25)
When the Lord called Moses on Mount Horeb, He revealed Himself to him as, I AM THAT I AM. Moses took this name to the Israelites, they were convinced and believed that the Lord had sent him, and they accepted his leadership. With the name God, he went to the presence of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to ask for the release of the Israelites. In disdain the king asked Moses, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let the Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.” (Exodus 5:2) Instead the king increased the daily task of the Israelites and this angered the Israelites a lot. The Israelites expressed their dissatisfaction of the hardship that Moses leadership has brought them. After Pharaoh has turned down the “let my people go” request of Moses, he returned to the Lord to seek His face. And God spoke to him,
“I am the Lord. And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not know to them. And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers. And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant. Wherefore, say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you our from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you of out of their bondage, I will redeem you with a stretched out arm and with a great judgments. And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the Lord.” (Exodus 6:2-8)
When ever man is going through a certain situation, a new revelation is about to be revealed. That is why God demanded patience from His children any time they are going through an unpleasant circumstances. The situation of Moses as the leader of Israelites made him to run back to God and placed demand on his calling. It was like he took his case to God and poured his heart out and said, “Lord you called me to deliver your people, ‘Why am I encountering all this difficulties and hindrances?”’ The response of God was astounding. God revealed the relationship He had with Moses’ forefathers that was centered on the Lord’s name. The name “Almighty God,” was revealed to his forefather, Abraham, about four hundred years ago, at the point of His covenant with Abraham. (Genesis 17:1) Abraham and Isaac equipped themselves with this name in the course of their spiritual journey on earth and they were immensely blessed. The name was revealed to Moses as an inheritance from his forefathers. The second name “I AM THAT I AM” was revealed to him at the point of his calling on Mount Horeb. He took this name to the Israelites in Goshen, the stone-hearted Israelites received the I AM THAT I AM as the God of Israel wholeheartedly and they accepted his leadership. The unpleasant situation described above among the Israelites in the land of Goshen brought about the revelation of the third name of God “JEHOVAH.” Each name was revealed at a specific time for a specific purpose. It is like the accumulated power of God that His name represented in His dealing with mankind from the fourth generation ago up to that time was given unto Moses for the purpose of what God was about doing among His people.
When the name Jehovah was revealed to Moses, in the spiritual realm the deliverance of the Israelites was established. The defeat of their enemies was documented in the spiritual realm. Their numerous needs in the course of their forty years journey in the wilderness, that was not known to them at the moment was established and made available for them in the spiritual realm thence forth. The revelation of the name of Jehovah God unto Moses marked the beginning of the deliverance of Israelites from their task-master in Egypt, where God miraculously glorified Himself against the kingdom of Pharaoh. Whenever Moses called upon the name JEHOVAH in any situation, God would answer him in glorious honor of His name.
THE NAME OF GOD AS THE WEAPON OF WARFARE
The experience of David in the Valley of Elah can be described as unbelievable. It was a battle between a professional warrior and a civilian. The warrior relied on his war experience. The civilian has no experience of war but possessed rich experience of the word of God and faithfulness of God towards His people. In the battle front, the two opposing parties demonstrated their prowess. The giant showed off his size, his shield and his weapons and he boasted in his past experiences and strength. As a civilian David has no weapon to show off, no protecting shield and no armor. But he was boastful of the name of God and faithfulness of God as he confronted the giant with the name of Heavenly God.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. The all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” (I Samuel 17:45-47)
I grew up on the farm in Nigeria. I had a sling (catapult) that I used to hunt birds and squirrels in those days. I know that no matter how good a sling may be, when it is swung, the stone cannot travel at the speed of a bullet fired from a gun. It is amazing, anytime I think about the victory of David against Goliath. I believe that it must have taken a stone fired from a sling, propelled by the heavenly host to penetrate in to the skull of a renowned giant-warrior like Goliath. The stone defied the protective shield of the helmet of brass. The tough skin and the stone-hard skull bones of the giant could not resist the thrusting force of the stone from penetrating. Evidently, it was not the stone that killed the giant; it was the faith of David in name of God of Israel that spurred the host of heaven into action and piloted the stone with a powerfully driven thrust into the skull of the heathen giant.
Strength does not make a tiny man to become a giant killer; it is wisdom of the word God. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. The wisdom that is embedded in the understanding of the word of God reveals that all blessing flow from God. This wisdom led David to hold on to the divine mystery in the name of God and dangled it confidently in the front of the heathen giant. A tiny giant killer has connection with the divine source and he taps into power from above for divine strength. That was why David said to Goliath, “And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear; the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” (I Samuel 17:47) In the day of despair, there is a sure and certain refuge; it is under the shadow of Almighty God. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10) Our justification through faith, which is the end product of salvation, will secure a dwelling place for us in the most secret place of Almighty God, but our daily living in righteousness will keep us there. When the giant of our lives is raging, harassing and terrorizing us, remember to run into the sure refuge, and exercise unwavering faith in the Lord. Draw out your weapon, which is the name of God. “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11) trusting Him that He is in control, God will faithfully fulfill His promises of deliverance and grant us triumph over the enemy.
WHY WAS THE NAME OF JESUS THE TARGET OF SATAN IN TEMPTATION?
Before Jesus began His ministry, no record of direct attack of enemy was known about him. At the point of His baptism at River Jordan, the mystery of His mission made Him to become a force to recon with in the spiritual realm when Holy Spirit, in form of a dove rested upon Him, and the Father in Heaven declared, “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” The devil sensed something powerful in the spiritual realm. Someone was so important and honored spiritually that the God can acknowledged on earth. And the strategy of his wicked attack began.
After the declaration, the spirit of God led Jesus into the wilderness. He was there for forty days and nights fasting. A point to note is that whenever the children of God are seeking the face of God in fasting and prayer, the camp of the enemy is on fire. Perhaps at this moment Satan verified the spiritual profile of Jesus Christ and found no sin. Perhaps he found spiritual consistency and no record of spiritual weaknesses. In wisdom, Jesus Christ was unparalleled, in understanding he was beyond human imagination and in might he was supernatural. Perhaps Satan beheld the nature of God in the humanlike Jesus Christ and wondered and asked himself, “Who is this man?
Have we ever thought of why Satan centered his temptations on who Jesus was? One can easily detect the ignorance of Satan about Jesus Christ in the temptation because the plan and processes of our salvation was completely hidden from the enemy. Certainly, the decision of salvation plan of mankind in the Mighty Throne of God was far beyond the knowledge of Satan. Some assume that Satan must have known about the plan of salvation. However, we must remember that Satan was an angel, one of the creatures of God. No matter the assumed power that human beings may attribute to this evil angel, only God is the omnipotent and omnipresent, all knowing Spirit Being.
The purpose of the temptation of Satan was to achieve two important issues. First, to determine the deity of Jesus Christ and secondly, to destroy Him spiritually the way he destroyed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan combined his knowledge of human being and his knowledge of God in his temptation of Jesus Christ. Satan was aware of the vulnerability of man regarding food; he knew about man’s gullibility to deceit and his insatiable desire for wealth. Satan also knew the holiness of God because, before his fall, he was the anointed guardian cherub that was covered with precious stones and stood in the presence of God in His Holy Mountain.
“Son of man, weep for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign LORD: You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone—red carnelian, chrysolite, white moonstone, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald—all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. I ordained and anointed you as the mighty angelic guardian. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire. You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you. (Ezekiel 28:12–15)
Satan knew what man did not know. Satan knew that the Son of God would not jeopardize His position before His Father in Heaven by taking instructions from a fallen angel. Satan also knew that power and authority are attached to the personality of the Son of God. Remember, sin took Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. The strategy of Satan was to make Jesus fall into sin by tempting Him to place priority on food, wealth and His might instead of His mission on earth and thereby reveal His spiritual identity to an enemy. And the evil objective of Satan was to contaminate the deity of Jesus Christ with sin so that His branch of power could be severed, knowing that God cannot co-exist with sin. Satan used all these understanding in challenging Jesus Christ as the Son of God in temptation.
But why was the determination of the name of Jesus so important in the temptation? Again, we come to the principle we earlier learn in this study. Anyone that has power to give name to anything whether living thing or non-living possesses authority and control over the thing. This was the reason why Satan designed the temptation with obvious weakness of man and therefore put Jesus in difficult position that can force Him to respond to the tempting suggestions and carried his biddings in the suggested name. The spiritual implication was that if Jesus did according to the suggestions of Satan, it means Jesus has consented to the name and Satan had succeeded in naming Jesus. Jesus did not respond to the alluring temptation neither did he consented to the name.
Temptation of Satan and Response of Jesus Christ
Result of Temptation
Conclusion of Satan
The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God tell this stone to become bread.”
Jesus answered, It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’
|Son of God
Devil showed Jesus all the kingdom of the world, and said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, if you worship me, it will all be yours.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.”
|Son of God
Devil led him to the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.”
Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to test.”
|Son of God
Satan understood the interpretation of likely responses of Jesus to the temptations. A negative response from Jesus was an indication that He is the Son of God, since the thoughts and the ways of God are different from that of man. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8–9) Although Jesus was truly the Son of Almighty God but that was not His spiritual identity. His spiritual identity is Christ, the anointed one.
When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. They shouted, “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Matthew 8:28–29
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit! Mark 5:6–8
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, “Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God! Luke 4:33–34
Satan was after the name! The demonic force knew Jesus as the Son of Most High God but they never knew him as Christ. Even the demonic possessed man that attacked the sons of Sceva did not call Him Christ. We may wonder why? Two things readily come to mind: lack of the knowledge of the name and lack of authority to mention the name ‘Jesus Christ.’ The word of God is an unchangeable law in the spiritual realm. “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, or things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11) The demonic forces do not want to bow and they do not want to confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord. The confession of the name of Jesus Christ as the Lord is interpreted in the demonic world as decamping. That is why confession is very important in the process of salvation. “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10)
THE CODE OF SALVATION
Jesus was alone with the disciples at the coast of Caesarea Philippi. One of the most powerful missions of Jesus was about to be established. In the spiritual realm, a principle of salvation was about to be established with mankind. The foundation stone of deliverance was about to be laid. The seal of heaven was about to be established on earth, but all these required a code, and a man must break the code before these can take place. A man has to break this code according to the principle that we earlier stated: That the purpose of revelation is to bless the person or the generation of who received the revelation.
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” And they said, “Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.” He saith unto them, “But whom say ye that I am?” And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father, which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. (Matthew 16:13–20)
Jesus started by asking the disciples, “Whom do men say I the Son of man am?” The disciples responded: some say you are the John the Baptist, some Elijah, or one of the prophets. Jesus turned to them and asked, “But what about you, who do you say I am?” Jesus was not asking the disciples a leading question to merely introduce Himself to them. He was implying that, “Even if the world does not know me, because you are my disciples, you have a responsibility to know me and reveal me to the world.” And then Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” That was the code. Simon Peter, one of the beloved disciples broke the code. Brethren, please reflect upon the response of Jesus Christ and you will understand this passage better. Jesus replied, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven. In other words, this mystery was not known to anybody on earth; this name was only known to God the Father who revealed it to Peter. When Peter made this great confession of the divinity of Jesus Christ, Our Lord Savior began to make prophetic declarations of blessing upon the revelation. Let us take the declarations one by one.
- Upon this rock (this solid foundation of truth and powerful revelation) I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it—a principle of salvation was established. That is why the Bible says, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21) That is why a confession of faith before the elects that “Jesus Christ is the Son of God” became an instrument of identification with Jesus Christ in order to be rescued from the clutches of Satan.
- I [Christ, the divine authority of salvation] will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven— (which is the gospel of Jesus Christ) that opened the door of the kingdom of God to about 3000 people on the day of Pentecost. The first sermon ever preached by man was made by Peter. The same gospel of Jesus Christ continues to open the door of salvation to multitude till this day.
- Whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven—a principle of deliverance was established by this prophecy—because, “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow of the things in Heaven and things in earth and things under the earth and that every tongues should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10–11) The unseeing enemies that attack the saints must bow at the mention of the name of Jesus Christ. Problems, sickness, our concerns and anxieties are bound and must bow in the name of Jesus Christ. Whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven—this includes loosing the oppressed that in the shackles of enemy, setting the spiritual captives free and releasing divine blessing of God to minister to our needs and situations when we pray.
The last part of the prophetic declaration of Jesus Christ concerning His revealed name is the divine seal that Heaven recognized. The seal in the name of Jesus Christ is established on earth for both defensive and offensive, and it is linked to the Throne of Grace before Almighty God so that our prayers will be honored. It means that we have to sentence the evil spirits on earth before the Heaven execute their judgments, then bind them and cast them into the bottomless pit. That is why Jesus Christ commanded us to ask for whatever we want in His name (John 14:14) with assurance that we shall not be turned down. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)
Brethren, do you know that the prophets in the Old Testament, as powerful as they were, both major and minor prophets, did not cast out demons? The reason was that the name of Jesus Christ was not revealed to them and the authority to bind and loose was not given to them. Please pause and reflect on this! You can now understand the magnitude of spiritual power that God gave to His children when He revealed His name to them.
