The noisome pestilence, Coronavirus COVID-19, has touched down on Planet Earth. All nations in the world are in state of pandemonium and fear. The deadly pandemic has torn apart families, rendered many children orphans and made many wives widows and many husbands widowers. The horrible plague has shut down nations and cities all over the world. It has made the crowded streets like Times Square in New York and other major tourist attractions like Disney World all over the world to become desolate and mostly empty. The noisome plague has wrecked the buoyant economies of the powerful countries all over the world and triggered an economic recession that has devastated the earth. The beauty of all this is that just as the plague came one day, it shall leave us alone one day. But all nations of the earth shall remember that the only solution that the highly intelligent scientists all over the world have recommended to combat the plague is to maintain social distancing.
Social distancing includes maintaining distance of at least six feet or more apart from the next person beside you. This also involves maintaining hygienic distance within yourself by avoiding touching your face, nose and mouth with your hands carefully. It includes covering mouth and nose with mask in order to avoid the spread of droplets of the virus through coughing and sneezing. It includes self-quarantine in order to curtail the spreading of the infectious virus to others around you. It includes avoiding visiting elderly members of the family irrespective of the love and closeness you have for them. Lastly, it includes wearing mask and hand gloves.
All these are the hygienic precautions recommended by the doctors to curtail the spread of the plague. The Spirit of God that spoke through the mouth of His servants had imposed spiritual social distancing between believers and unbelievers. God was not encouraging hatred among humanity and was not about racism issue. The activities and character dispositions of the unbelievers forms the embodiment of sinfulness. They are synonymous to spiritual viruses called sin. Believers are the people that have been sacrificially cleansed by the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ through the process of salvation. Most of the time, believers do always underestimate the preciousness of their spiritual values, but the scripture put a high premium on the people of God and described them as a “chosen generation,” “royal priesthood,” “an holy nation” and “peculiar people.” “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Because we are precious in the eyes of God, He counseled us expressly through the Apostle Paul about the necessity of spiritual social distancing through His word, saying: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)
The prophet Jeremiah also commanded the people of God to implement social distancing from the Babylonians. In this prophetic utterance during his time, Babylon was the embodiment of idolatry and sinfulness. Like an infectious virus, the man of God warned us to maintain a healthy distance from the ensnaring instrument of sin. “Flee from Babylon! Save yourselves! Don’t get trapped in her punishment!” (Jeremiah 51:6)
King Solomon, the wisest king in the history of man, said, “He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” (Proverbs 13:20) In other words, the king was simply saying, if thou walk with people in the righteous wisdom of God you will not perish with the fools that are dwelling in wantonness of sin. In order to achieve the wisdom that shall ensure our spiritual protection, we cannot afford to intermingle with spiritual fools that engage in sinful life. The word of God warned us through Prophet Ezekiel, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:20) We must maintain a spiritual social distance from sinful generations so that we do not partake in the perilous fruit of their sinfulness. In the same manner, Apostle Peter warned the spiritually wise people on the day of Pentecost, during his first preaching to people in the city of Jerusalem, saying: “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” (Acts 2:37) God is expressly speaking to the believers: “come out from among the sinful world, and be ye separate, and touch not the unclean works of sin.” He is also speaking to the sinners to distance themselves from the world of sin and do all to cling to the Cross. The scripture says, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like.’ (Galatians 5:19-21) Be spiritually wise and maintain wise and reasonable distance from the work of flesh so that you can maintain closed, fruitful and blessed relationship with God.
Prayer: O Lord God Almighty, grant me a principled mindedness and enlightened mind to sum up courage to completely separate myself from every form of worldly intermingling that can drag me into sins in Jesus name, Amen. “The friendship of the world is enmity with God.” (James 4:4) O Lord, grant me the grace to maintain a permanent and worthy friendship with you in Jesus name, Amen.
