17-Year Locust

A cicada is an insect. It is often called the seventeen-year locust because it lives underground as a larva for seventeen years before emerging as an adult to live in the open. Imagine the toiling of this insect in those seventeen long years. Perhaps in those long years of sojourning under the ground, in all the four seasons of each year, in the freezing cold of the winter and in the oven-hot weather of the summer. If the cicada could think, perhaps it must have been consoling itself, “it will soon be over,” “I will soon be in the open”. “I am tired of this hole, I am going home up high where I will be free to move around.” “I will fly, I will sing aloud, I will have babies…” although being an insect, it may not live to see its off springs emerging as an adult cicada from the ground in the next seventeen years.

I watched a documentary program on this insect on the television recently. I watched with amazement how the adult cicada emerged from the ground. It was painfully interesting to note that as these insects were emerging from the ground a squirrel was waiting to welcome them into its mouth as part of its breakfast of that day. And the generation of the insect was thus cut off from the land of the living. I said to myself, “This is a disaster. How can one end a journey of seventeen years in the hand of enemy,” I wondered. Surprisingly too, not all the insects became a meal to the squirrel. Some escaped the sharp eyes of the squirrel and managed to fly away.

People say, earth is the market where we run around for economic reasons, and heaven is our home. We shall soon go home because. Like a cicada that emerged from the ground after 17 years, no matter the number of years we spend here on Earth, we shall soon embark on the journey to eternity. At the end of this journey on Earth, the redeemed of the Lord shall be welcomed home into the open arms of God into the bosom of Abraham where there is joy and peace. But the unrepented sinners shall be welcomed into the open mouth of the gates of Hell where there is gnashing of teeth, the home address of the Big Squirrel called Satan. The scripture tells us that, “the wages of sin is death, and the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.” The onus is on you today, to either repent of your sins so that you can receive the FREE gift of salvation through grace. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) This gift is offered ONLY by our Lord Jesus Christ through the atonement of His blood. The wise elect received it by grace through faith and were saved.  “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) The foolish adamant sinners receive a painful payback wages for their sins and were eternally condemned into the Hellfire. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

Think today before it is too late; because the gift of God brings forth joy but the wrath of God bring forth gnashing of teeth. For this purpose Jesus Christ left His glory in Heaven and came to this earth to die on the Cross of Calvary. His precious blood became a cleansing detergent for our sin-sick souls. Let this be whispered in to your ear, “Where do you want to spend your eternity?” Make a wise choice today.
