“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:11-15
The information in the Book of Revelation passage above as regards the Great White Throne Judgment is of a serious consideration to all Christians. It revealed that God is keeping records of all our activities on earth. It revealed that God had an agenda of judgment for all the activities of humanity on earth. The revealed truth is supposed to attract our attention. Perhaps we are wondering whether this is true or not. Human beings have tendencies of keeping records that worth keeping. The various educational institutions we attended have the records of our life-time educations. The certificates we received are evidences of our education and they are our own copy of our records with the institutions. Man had devised many ways of recording conversations. Human being possess devices that can record video events of an action of anyone in the range and circumference that the video can cover. If human beings had attained these sophisticated devices, imagine the Creator, the Giver of wisdom, knowledge and understanding, had better ways of recording the activities of humanity wherever they are on earth.
The dead shall surely rise in their bodily appearance and appear before the Creator. There are many passages in the Bible that revealed that whatever that is dead in the eyes of man is not dead in the eyes of God. The book of (Ezekiel 37:1-10) and the remarkable miracle of resurrection of Lazarus the brother of Mary and Martha (John 11:43-44) was pointer to this fact. The dead will appear before God for the purpose of accountability about how they had spent their lives and managed the grace that God had bestowed upon them.
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life Revelation 20:12a
From the accountant’s point of view, books are very important. In the accounts records of a company, the accountant opens many books. Books of account of a company ranges from cash book, debtors book, Creditors books, Asset books, Liability books and so on. And there are other books like Profit and Loss book and Balance Sheet—these books are consider the final books of the company. The final balance in the various primary records of account books are entered into the Profit and Loss Account to determine the financial health of the company. The balance sheet reveals the financial worth and strength of a company to the shareholder. If a company is worthless, no investor will like to invest in the company—and finally, the worthless company will be liquidated—closed down and ceased to exist.
The books in the passage we read can be described as the book of our various activities on earth—various book of righteousness credited to us when we are here on earth and various books of sinfulness that we owe, that had not been settled nor repented of are debited against us. Again, there is another book, that is distinct from all other books of records—which is called the Book of Life. It is call book because when God opened the door of redemption to humanity, He began to keep the record of the people that had embraced the salvation package that God extended to humanity through grace—by the sacrificial death of His Son, Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesian 2:8-9) If a person’s name is not found in this Book of Life, it means the person had not become a born again child of God. It mean that the liabilities of his sins had not been redeemed. It means the person had not received salvation. Two situations may be the factors why the name a person cannot be found in the Book of Life. (1) If a person did not receive salvation through Jesus Christ, (2.) If a person had record of unrepented sins that caused the name of the person to be blotted out of the Book of Life.
“… and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:12b, 14-15)
The greatness of the White Throne Judgment—The finality of the judgment is so scary. On earth here and in each country, there is a Supreme Court. Whatever judgment the supreme court of a nation rendered, that is the final. There is no further appeal on the same charges. But the judgment of the Great White Throne, is greater than that of the Supreme Courts of all nations. And the finality of it is so scary. When Supreme Court render any judgment, the parties concerned will go home and continue in their respective normal activities abiding in the rendered judgment. But the finality of the Great White Throne Judgment bring forth eternal and permanent separation in the lives of the soul of human beings standing in judgment before God not for a brief period but for ever and ever. The righteous will be eternally be in the joy of the Lord but on the other hand, the wicked will be locked in the in torment of pain and sorrow in the hell fire.
Having known that whether we are alive when the end of this age will come or whether we have passed away as a result of death, we shall surely appear before our Creator at last. Every man shall be brought to judgment seat of God. Some unto eternal joy and peace in the presence of God. Jesus Christ did not leave in darkness about this fact, “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.” (Matthew 25:34-36) On the other hand, some shall be unto eternal perdition in the hottest core of the hell fire. “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.” (Matthew 25:41-43) The onus is on us today to shape the pathway of our final destination and begin to prepare for the final home of our choices. I believe that we all agree that commendation is better than condemnation. May the Lord help us!
It is therefore our responsibility to ensure that our name is in the Book of Life. Far away in the book of Exodus, Moses knew about this book. “And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.” (Exodus 32:31-33) With the 66 books of the Bible and the presence of Holy Spirit, we cannot afford to be ignorance of this important Book of Record. To achieve this important grace we have to reconsider our relationship with our Creator and do His blessed will. We have to obey His precept and embrace salvation. We have to consider our relationship with humanity in the light of the understanding of the word of God and deal kindly with them in righteousness and holiness that God demanded from all of us. In addition, we must also flee from all forms of unrighteousness that tend to drag us into sinfulness.
Prayer: O Lord, Let Thy mercy guide us to make the right eternal choice in the course of our journey and activities on the surface of the earth. Heavenly Father, let your commendation usher us into the comfort of your presence at last in Jesus name, Amen.
