The Heart of an Intercessor

We have read about so many individual that stood in the platform of faith to receive their blessings. There is no doubt that God is still answer the prayer of His people. The awesome demonstration of faith by the woman with the issue of blood is a case in point. “And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.” (Matthew 9:20-22 KJV) She received the reward of her faith when she touched the helm of the garment of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The lepers could not touch the helm of the garment of Jesus Christ but they shouted afar off and say, “And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.” (Luke 17:13-14 KJV) The mercy of God prevailed in their pleadings and they were made whole.

Yet there are millions of people out there in our communities. They have hands but cannot touch the garment of Jesus Christ. They have mouths, but they cannot shout for His help and mercy. Their state of life is beyond the state of being handicapped. Some of them have become physical vegetables to the point that they cannot do anything for themselves. Some have become spiritual vegetables. Apart from the fact that they are problems to themselves, they are also problems to the community. They do not have a clue on how to seek the face of God, talk less of asking for His divine deliverance from their state of hopelessness and helplessness. That is why the efforts of four beautiful people who lowered their sick friend through the roof before our Lord Jesus Christ so that the presence of the Lord might bring divine healing to him was a powerful physical demonstration of intercessory ministry. “And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. … Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.” (Mark 2:3-5, 11 KJV) Have you ever considered that, if those four friends were not thoughtful about the health of their friend and did nothing within the available grace they had to intercede for him practically in their own little way as they had done, he would have died in his helplessness?

Intercessors are bridge builders. With their prayers, they build a spiritual bridge of prayers from earth to touch the heart of the Heavenly Father that His hands of deliverance may be stretched forth to deliver and to rescue the steady drowning one in the water of life. Intercessors are burden bearers. Their love cut across the barriers of racial, economical and positional discrimination and this gave them the grace to be there for the needy ones at the point of their needs. They are faith brokers who are constantly standing on the blessed promises of the word of God in the Bible for the benefit of others. They place their faith on the line to solicit and negotiate in prayer for divine intervention of the Almighty God in the hopeless situation of the person or situations they are interceding for. The intercessors are the hands, feet and eyes of these helpless millions in our communities. They are the ones that touch the helm of the garment of Jesus Christ on behalf of the helpless people. They are the ones that plead on their behalf for mercy and forgiveness. They are the ones that can ask God to effect a change in the lives of the helpless, unbelieving world in our community that the grace of salvation for humanity will not be wasted.

God is still answering the prayers of His children even in our own time, but the precepts of sowing and reaping are still applicable. If the people of God fail to sow into intercessory prayer for God’s intervention in their affairs, the harvest of His blessing will not be available unto mankind. That is why God lamented through Prophet Ezekiel saying, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” (Ezekiel 22:30 KJV) The nations of the world are in a spiritual vegetative state. Confusion, chaos and helplessness are the order of the day. The hopeless situations around us are begging for the sacrificial activities of the intercessors. Wars and many forms of terrorism in our world should keep the intercessors on their feet so that God’s wrath will not descend upon humanity. The unprecedented corruption, abomination and all forms of wickedness that had eaten into the fabric of many nations of the world calls for urgent intervention of the intercessors that the mercy of God may prevail, that an end may come to the sorrow of mankind. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14 KJV) The Lord God Almighty still desires to heal our land, but the intercessors should seek His face. If you are one of His people that are called by His name, kindly join the intercessory ministry in your church, seek for prayer partner in your working place, and lastly join us on your knees, in your closet, to seek the Lord’s face concerning the problems of humanity.

Prayer: O Lord, enroll me in the work of your ministry. Like Abraham, Daniel and Nehemiah of old, endow me with the spirit of intercessor. Empower me with your grace to stand faithfully before you to intercede in faith for the need of nations for your glory, in Jesus name.
