“And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” (Genesis 5:24) This verse speaks volume to Bible believing children of God all over the world. We read about the ministries of the patriarchs like Noah and Abraham in the Bible but the ministry of Enoch was not elaborated in the scripture. Despite the guidance of God, His commandments and the covenants He had with these patriarchs, He still needed to remind Abraham to “Walk before me and be perfect.” (Genesis 17:1) The only verse in Genesis that talked about the successful and exemplary ministry of Enoch revealed a pleasant relationship he had with God in his walking. I had considered this verse several times. I always ask myself many questions. “How did Enoch walked with God successfully when no one on earth had learnt about the precepts of repentance and forgiveness? As a sinner how was he able to approach the presence of holy God? How did he begin the journey and how was he taken to heaven?
Although no one knew how he operated in his ministry but Enoch walked faithfully before God. The book of Hebrews confirmed the pleasing faithfulness that Enoch demonstrated in his walking with God. “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:5-6)
Enoch walked with God preaching the word of God during his time. “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed …” (Jude 14-15) It is amazing that Enoch had revelation about the coming of the Lord in the book of Genesis. He did not keep this revelation to himself he preached it to the people of his time. He walked spiritually in the light of the wisdom of God. He knew about rapture, knew about the second coming of Christ right from the Genesis. “Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe.” (Proverbs 28:26 NLT)
King David echo the thoughtfulness of Enoch he chose to walk in the truth because of the lovingkindness of God, the Shepherd of David. “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1) Because of the lovingkindness of God, David walked in truth. “For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth.” (Psalm 26:3) David walked in the revelation of the word of God. When he had opportunity to kill King Saul, his enemy that was pursuing him with about 3000 soldiers, he refrained from doing evil. He said, who can kill the anointed of the Lord and be guiltless. “And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S anointed, and be guiltless?” (1 Samuel 26:9) No wonder God described David as a man His own heart. “… I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart …” (Acts 13:22)
Apostle Paul knew the importance of walking with the Lord so that we can please our Heavenly Father in the ministries He had committed in our hands. In his epistles to the brethren in Ephesus, he enjoined them to walk worthy. “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3) Also he admonished them as an ambassador of Christ to walk in love in order that they may show forth the beauty of the glory of God in their lives. “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.” (Ephesians 5:2)
As people that had been purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ through the grace of salvation, it is expedient that we walk responsibly before God in such a way that our lives will be pleasing unto Him. “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:10) As children of the Most High God, we need to demonstrate the heart of integrity in our relationship with mankind generally in order to make a difference in this fraudulent world. “That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.” (1 Thessalonians 4:12) Our vertical walking with God is reflected in our horizontal walking with humanity. Beloved, let us walk in love, in truth, in honesty, in righteousness, in faith and in holiness. Let us weigh our walking habits with God in the scale of His righteousness and let us effect necessary spiritual correction where needed in our lives from now on. The grace of the Lord will avail for us to be faithful in Jesus name, Amen.
Prayer: O Lord, our Merciful Father, grant us the grace to walk with You in the wholesome of your wisdom, understanding and obedience in Jesus name, Amen.
