Perhaps we have read this passage in the scripture and we just gloss over it and moved on to other things without considering the importance of the precepts in it, that is why we want to take another look at it today. In Matthew 18:20, the scripture says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Kindly endeavor to re-read this verse and then meditate about it. While I am not trying to break the law of God by re-editing the scripture, you will notice that if the preposition “for” that began the sentence is taking out of the statement, the verse will still be meaningful, but it would have lost the most important ingredient of the maxim. But the word was there for a purpose.
In our attempt that the enriching wisdom of God may be seen in the statement, the word of God is ascertaining in the scripture passage that, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” We intended that to provide meaning to this statement by consideration of the scripture passages. The scripture says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) The gathering of the specific people of God attracts the attention of the Most High God. God honors everything that reveals His glory. Praises unto God Almighty honors His glory. Repentance of the sinner is an honor unto God and that is why His mercy prevails for the sinner. The accompany praises and joy of the people of God as a token of their appreciation when their prayers are answered brings glory to God’s holy name. Humility of the meek honors God’s glory. “I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:8) If the people of God can exhibit God-pleasing faith in their gathering and in their plea, He will honor their appointment. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) Therefore when the purpose is glorious and the people are righteous and holy, and above all, if the gathering is spiritually conducive for the glory of God, the presence of God will manifest among His people.
This take us to the another precept in the same chapter saying, “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:19) Gathering together in the name of God is emphasizing unity of purpose in the gathering, righteous agreement concerning the main subject of the gathering and lastly subjection of the people to the absolute precept of faithfulness of God in the gathering. In Amos 3:3, the prophet asked, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” When two agreed on earth as touching anything, this simply means when the faith of two people of God joined together in unity of purpose and in single heartedness, their hearts of expectation totally focusing on the abilities and possibilities of Almighty God concerning their situations and they prayerfully desire the divine intervention of God in their lives, the power of God will avail for them.
The burdens and problems of this world is still driving us to seek the face of God in our families and communities. If the glorious purposes of God prompted you and spurred you to seek for the personal attention of God in your Christian endeavors, He is by your side according to His word. He will not be by you as a passive listener but rather as an active participator so that an opportunity will be provided you in order that you can lay your petitions before Him. Cast all your care upon Him because He careth for you. He is still answering the prayer of His people. He will not ignore your heartfelt pleas and desires.
Prayer: Oh Lord, hear us when we cry unto you. Let the power of your presence make difference in our Christian life journey. Incline your ear unto us in our low estate and wipe away our tears, and deliver us in Jesus name, Amen.
