There are many ways of communicating. Communication can be by gesture, making signals with our hands and fingers.  It could be by writing or verbal audible statement in a chosen language. Generally, communication is always a two way traffic—from the word of mouth of one person to the response of another. In the olden days, before the age of internet super highway, human messengers were sent on errand with the instrument of the message to deliver a long distance messages to a specific audience. Drums and trumpets played important roles then, in communicating messages to the general populace especially from the kings or the community rulers to inform them to assemble for important meetings. These instrument is used to alert and prepare the minds of the people about an ongoing development in the community.

Between 1830 and 1840 telegraph communication system was invented by Samuel Morse. This invention worked by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations. It solved long distance communication problems among the military and important government agencies. In March 1876, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), the Scottish-born American scientist who invented the telephone, received the official patent for the invention of a machine that transmitted sound by electricity. Since the middle of the last century to our present day, communication had been developed, revolutionized, and improved upon tremendously to include modern day smart telephones, various internet communications like media, email, text and video messages.

One thing that is common and certain about communication generally is that when it is exchanged, it always triggers action. The action may include carrying out a certain instruction or reacting in defiant to the message of the communication. Communicated messages makes people feel happy or sad depending upon how the targeted audience processes the information therein. Some communications carry a dagger that stabs the heart of the targeted audience and make him or her reacts angrily and possibly with a very deep emotion that triggers off weeping profusely.

The Lord God Almighty the Creator of the whole universe knows and understands how human being process communicated messages. From the time immemorial He had provided a spiritual regulation about how we communicate so that man can process the message of the communication peacefully. Our communication should bear an olive-branch that promotes peace and love. That’s why the scripture admonished us saying, Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” (Colossians 4:5-6) Every instruction in these verses are very important. ‘Walk in wisdom’ which can be further interpreted as ‘relate’ or ‘communicate’ in wisdom with people who are not as wise as we are so that we can put our precious time to purposeful use. The purpose why we should walk in wisdom is to ensure that our communication will leave the trail of peace and holiness behind so that we may continue peaceful fellowship. “Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14 NLT)

Our communicated speech should be graciously presented for the glory of God. It must be absolute truth because God condemn falsehood. This is what the scripture says about liars, “All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you’re an expert at telling lies. You love evil more than good and lies more than truth. You love to destroy others with your words, you liar! But God will strike you down once and for all…” (Psalm 52:2-5 NLT) Therefore our conversation must not be exaggerated with deceptiveness that is very common in our days.  In addition to this, our conversation must also be seasoned with salt so that the intended audience may be able to handle and interpret the speech in such a peaceful and dignify manner that will glorify God. Remember beloved, humility was the reason why the salt that made food sweet never reveals it white color in the food. We only notice and appreciate the sweetness of salt when we taste the food.

A television advertisement in the recent past clearly demonstrated the precept of the word of God above. A certain man forgot to celebrate the wedding anniversary with his wife. The wife did not get angry that husband did not remember to give her a flower and a kiss. She neither bottled herself up in anger and become moody and behave unseemly to her spouse. She applied wisdom in communicating her resentment. She got hold of a computer and opened an account for the payment of the bills of the family on the internet. Lovingly she called the attention of her husband to the account she opened and said, “Honey, I have opened an account for the payment of the family expenses.” The husband said, “That’s nice.” And he asked, “What is the password of the account?” The lady simply said, “Our wedding anniversary date.” Immediately the husband understood the message. He realized his error and he apologized made peace with his wise woman. This means, before the husband can pay the family expenses on the internet, he will first of all need to put in the wedding anniversary date as the password to log in. And by so doing, the man would never forget his wedding anniversary date. With wisdom, this wise woman solved a problem that could have messed up a marital relationship. Graciously she made a strong statement that clearly educated her husband never to forget important days and events of the family.

Before you communicate any message to anyone, first of all imagine how your audience will process the message, then proceed to graciously eliminate or minimize the pain, or on the other hand, maximize the joy of the reaction you expect from your targeted audience from the message.

Prayer: O Lord, make my tongue an instrument of peace. Let the utterance of my mouth come with grace and seasoned with salt to reveal the beauty of your glory in my conversation with people in Jesus name, Amen. In humility Heavenly Father, teach my mouth to converse with people in your peaceful wisdom in order to promote love of God in Jesus name, Amen.
