Unity Strengthens Division Weakens

The EU was not always as big as it is today. When European countries started to cooperate economically in 1951, only Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands participated. These countries officially became member of European Union in 1958. Over time, more and more countries decided to join. The union reached its current size of 28 member countries with the accession of Croatia on 1 July 2013. [1] United Kingdom joined the union in 1973.

These countries continued in their union. They became a force to reckon with in Europe. They were strong economically and during war time, in one accord, they fought the enemy aggression in unity. Twelve of the member countries have a common currency known as the Euro, and the citizens of the member nations do not need visa to enter into other countries within the union. Because they were strong economically, their union presented to them a common front to enter into various trade agreements to other nations of the world.

This beautiful relationship continued until June 23, 2016, when contentions between two political parties in the United Kingdom led to a vote on a political referendum for the United Kingdom to either stay or leave the union. The outcome of the referendum was 52 to 48 percent in favor of the group that wanted the United Kingdom to move out of the union. The union cracked and the United Kingdom fell to the will of the people.

Other nations of the world with no choice respected the will of the people. While some British citizens were rejoicing, some of them were so sad because of the outcome of the referendum. On the same day David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said he was going to resign. This followed an unpleasant chain reaction all over the world, as the stock markets all over the world plummeted. On June 24, 2016, more than two trillion dollars were lost in the stock market in one day. More sell off continued as a result of the domino effect of the cracked union.  Many companies in the United Kingdom are planning to relocate their headquarters to other nations. The relatively high value Great Britain pound sterling and common currency of the union, the Euro, depreciated drastically. Other nations of the world are now planning to renegotiate trade agreements with the fragmented European Union as well as the divorced nation—United Kingdom. As a result of the unpleasant precedent, some of the nations in the European Union are on the verge of drafting their own referendum to move out of the union. Even though Scotland is in talks to remove itself from the United Kingdom, the future of that country and Northern Ireland is uncertain given the fact that they both voted to stay in the European Union.

For every unity there is always a sacrifice or cost, but the benefit of the unity always supersedes and overwhelms the sacrifice. Because of the influx of refugees into the European Union nations as a result of the war in Syria, the United Kingdom was penny-wise to pull out of the union in order to avoid the sacrifice. At the same time, unfortunately, the nation was pound foolish as to forgo the overwhelming benefits of the union. No wonder the currency unit of the country, pound sterling as well as the Euro currency of the union lost tremendous value overnight.

The Heavenly Father is the author of unity. He created man and woman at the beginning. God blessed the union of the first couple with children and they became a family. Cluster units of families dwelling together became a community. Communities that dwell together formed a state. States that united together formed a country. The United States of America is composed of fifty states. No wonder this country is one of the most powerful nations on earth because they are wholeheartedly united together.

King Solomon revealed in his Holy Spirit inspired writings that in the economy of Almighty God, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?” (Ecclesiastes 9:9-11 KJV) The Holy Spirit inspired Psalmist echoed in agreement with King Solomon, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1 KJV)

The Lord God Almighty through His prophet said, “For I hate divorce!” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.” (Malachi 2:16 NLT)  Our world witness divorce in so many ways today. Divorce occurs in the union of a family. It occurs among communities. It happens among the states in a country. The union of countries do crack at times like EU. Wherever divorce occurs, the people within the union experience untold immeasurable loss as the result of the unfortunate consequences of the break off. The slogan of the labor unions in America is “The people, united, can never be defeated.”

Perhaps your holy and righteous union with anyone or any entity is shaking and is about to crack. Let us reason from the counsel of the word of God and think deeply. Let us endeavor to save our union because two are better than one. It is good and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity. Lastly, God hates divorce of any type. Therefore beloved, in unity of mind, unity of good purposes and unity of faith, be wise and be not pound foolish because the people, united, can never be defeated.

Prayer: O Lord, endow us with grace to yield in obedience to maintain the unity ordained by your precept so that our ways can be pleasing to you and that we may enjoy the benefit of the blessed unions that You have ordained in Jesus name, Amen.
