Lesson from a Faithful Dog

I had been living in United States of America for more than twenty five years now. In 2007, I went back to Nigeria, where I grew up, for a visit. In the house of one of the friends that I visited, I saw a dog. This dog was gaunt in appearance due to malnutrition. Most of the time, the dogs in the village subsists on remnants they find in the garbage and occasional crumbs that fall from their owner’s table during dining. Remarkably, what made this dog stand out was its unusual faithfulness. In its attempt to defend its master territory, the dog would bark to ward off strangers until its master would come to quiet her down. I remembered that when I was returning home that day, my friend decided to see me off and the dog followed by his side; perhaps to protect him from me or simply for the joy it gained from being around its owner. It took a lot of effort to persuade the dog to go back.

When I visited my home country again in the month of May 2016, I once again visited my my friend. Once again, my friend’s dog was acting the way it acted before. I also noticed that the dog had given birth to little cute puppies. As I was returning home, my friend offered to give me a ride in his car. To my amazement, I looked back in the car and the faithful dog and her little puppies were running after its owner’s car. He had to stop the car in order to persuade the dogs to return home. Then I remembered that this dog exhibited the same faithfulness about nine years ago. Consistently, it had been faithful to its owner. In addition, its little puppies had learned faithfulness from their mother. I was so touched about the consistent faithfulness of the dog and the fact that it succeeded in passing on the same to its off-spring.

Considering this experience in the light of the word of God, Our Heavenly Father expressed His feelings and anguish about the way his people forsook him. “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.” (Isaiah 1:2-4 KJV) The dog that was not well nourished did not rebel and forsake its owner. Ordinary animals that are less intelligent in comparison to humans know their master, relates with him well, and do everything to show appreciation toward him. The faithful dog of my friend raised its off-spring to exhibit the same faithfulness towards their master.

One may say that it’s normal for some dogs to exhibit faithfulness to its owner. This it true. However, we should look inward this day and consider the faithfulness of Almighty God in our lives. We are sailing through each day because of His mercy, compassion, care and protection. He has never and will never forsake us. In fact, He is always mindful of us to meet us at our point of need. He is God of our salvation that daily loads us with His benefits. Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.” (Psalm 68:19 KJV) He order our steps so that iniquity will not have dominion over us. “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” (Psalm 119:133 KJV) He remembered us in our low estate, redeemed us from our enemies and gave food to all flesh because His mercy endures forever. “Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: and hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth forever. Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth forever.” (Psalm 136:23-25 KJV)

Based on the faithfulness of God in our lives, I am appealing to you to reevaluate your faithfulness in your relationship with God Almighty. Our Heavenly Father deserves more than mere worship, He desires our faithful relationship with Him. He wants to see us closer and closer with Him. He wants us to table our plans before Him so that He can help us to achieve our laudable glorious goals on earth. He desires to bless His children. You owe Him a duty to teach your children to establish a faithful relationship with God. His hand of grace has been extended to you this day. He said, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” (Isaiah 1:18-19 KJV)

Prayer: O Lord, endow me with a heart of appreciation in order that I may reevaluate my ways before you and repent my sins. Let me be able to strengthen a faithful and consistent relationship with you and be able to put you in the center of my life, in the position of preeminence for your glory, in Jesus name, Amen.
