Sons of Issachar

Issachar was one of the twelve children of Jacob. He is the fifth out the six sons of Leah. Growing up among his siblings in the household of Jacob, his father saw his amazing potentials and abilities. At the point of death of Jacob his father, he prophesied upon Issachar saying, “Issachar is a rawboned donkey lying down among the sheep pens. When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his land, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor. (Genesis 49:14-15) Issachar became a large tribe and a force to reckon with among the twelve tribes of Israel. Knowledge was not elusive to this tribe. The scripture says, “A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.”(Proverbs 24:5) In understanding, this tribe did not take the back seat among the people of God. This is important because as the scripture says, “Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.” (Ecclesiastes 7:19)

As the tribe increased in wisdom they also increased numerically. It came to a point when they had about two hundred powerful wise leaders among the Sons of Issachar in Israel. “And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.” (1 Chronicles 12:32) The children of Issachar had understanding of the times, they knew the nation and the people of Israel, and they were well conversant with their culture. They understood the political affairs of the people and they were also aware of those needs that will benefit the people of God. Since wisdom is the application of knowledge and understanding, the Sons of Issachar were gifted with grace of God and spiritual insight to know what to do at the right time for the benefit of the entire nation of Israel and to the glory of God. Promptly, at the right time, they applied their unique spiritual gifts strategically to benefit the nation. “And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure. Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.” (Isaiah 33:6-7)

Remember now the words of Jesus Christ to the people, “When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?” (Luke 12:55-56) In our time wisdom of man seems to us more preferable to the wisdom of God. In the name of secularism of state, the seasoned lawyers forcibly took away Ten-Commandments from the primary and secondary schools. Unfortunately, drugs and all kinds of atrocities sneaked in to the public schools system and made their permanent abode therein. Children were given condoms in the school as a way of preventing STD and unwanted pregnancy. Some had wrecked their homes in divorce in order to collect spousal and child support and other forms of immoral infidelities and selfishness. Human right law is on the side of the obvious sinners and evil doers in the society and no one dare to raise hand and complain about their habits because it will amount to discrimination, yet Christians are implicitly denied the right to practice their faith according to the word of God. Today, physical forms have been given to various sinful habits in our nations. We are all being given the license of “coming out” in various negative sinful characters. This evil character takes the form of stealing the money of a nation through embezzlement and various manipulations in the stock market and other forms of corruption. This licentious ideology has even penetrated into the churches and is daily eroding the moral fabric of our individual and collective lives. Can we not discern the signs of the time and do something urgently to curb the evil practices in our day?

Where are the sons of Issachar of our time? Where are the spiritual juggernauts? Where are the spiritual think-tanks? Where are the people with positive influence, men of great spiritual insight and wisdom, people that are prepared and empowered with the anointing of Holy Spirit for a time like this, to stand in the gap before God so that the land will not be destroyed? “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” (Ezekiel 22:30) Today, ‘there are more than 2.3 billion Christians, more than 5 million churches, more than 43,000 denominations, and more than 12 million Christian workers across the globe.” [i] With all these amassed resources, why is it that the entire human race is facing spiritual drought? Why are the destructive locusts encroaching and devouring the land? Why is our land filled with pestilence and putrefying sores upon the heads of many and in the minds of the people? Why are the various terrorists that equipped themselves with power of negative policies, conventional weapons and corruptible pens terrorizing our nations?

“If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14) The Sons of Issachar of our time should wake up to your responsibilities! Wake up in heart of diligence to serve the Living God. Wake up in faithfulness to the impulses of Holy Spirit to minister righteousness among humanity. Apply the God given grace, the spiritual insight and divine abilities that God endow you to preach the word of God and seek the face of God in prayer to rescue our nations. .

Prayer: Oh Lord, I plead for your mercy that you may use my wisdom and spiritual insight for your glory so that through your divine intervention, when I cry Abba Father in my prayer, the physical and spiritual problems of our nation can be subjected to the rule of your mercy and compassion in Jesus name, Amen.
