Go Forward

One of the fearful moments in the ministry of Moses was immediately after the Israelites moved out of Egypt. They camped by the shore of the Red Sea. Tired and weary from the day’s journey, they were relaxing by the sea shore. All of a sudden, they heard the sound of multitude of battle chariots and the charioteers coming. They beheld from afar off, the finest armies of Egyptians pursuing the Israelites. The joy of the ‘free at last’  people of God became sour. Everybody ran to his tent.  Mothers were scrambling to locate their children. Men were grouping with their various leaders to discuss the options available to them. It was a moment of desperation. It was just like a situation where there is a fire on the roof and a baby in the room.

Some of the Israelites murmured against Moses saying, “Was there no grave in Egypt that you brought us to the shore of Red Sea to kill us?”  As the leader of the massive community Moses responded courageously to their concerns, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:13-14 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.” (Exodus 14:15-16)

Wait a minute! Moses told the Israelites to stand still. But God directed that the Israelites should go forward. The faithless people may ask, “Go forward to where?” “Was it into the sea to perish?” The commandment might sound ridiculous to the faithless. Forward is the way to go if God is leading His people. It was a perfect instruction to the faithful because the way of salvation is a straight-forward direction in obedience to the commandment of God. The pathway of salvation of humanity is totally the prerogative of God who is leading them to safety. Moses yielded in obedience to God. God further directed Moses on the steps he needed to take to pave the divine way of salvation for the Israelites in the midst of the deep ocean. “But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.” In the wilderness journey of life, the way of salvation is the King’s uncommon forward highway.

Let us consider the unique principle about the instruction of God unto Moses at this crucial moment of His ministry. The normal inclination of movement of every mobile creature is forward. When birds are migrating from one place to the other, they do not fly backward. When the animals are walking around in the meadow, even if they are running away from their predators, forward is the direction of their movements. Horses are athletic animals nurtured and prepared by their trainers for competitive races. In all their various competitive events, they always run forward at a remarkable high speed. We do not need to mention the flying insects and the ones that cannot fly always  move forward directionally. The airplanes manufactured by man were made to fly forward. Drivers on reversed gear cannot drive through a long journey reversing. Regardless of the exceptional ability of man to maneuver his movement directionally to suit his purposes, the unique command of soldiers in training is “forward march,” not backward march.

We all know that backsliding is a spiritual setback. Demas backslid and forsook his honorable calling as a co-worker with Apostle Paul. He strayed away into the worldliness and was unable to retrace his steps back to the Lord. He was completely lost into the worldly crowd. King Solomon, after God had elevated him  to building a Temple of God called the Solomon Temple, one of the seven wondrous edifices on earth, he backslid. He went back from worshipping God and descended so low to become an idol worshiper.

If you are on the Lord’s side right now, continue to move forward in righteousness. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 15:58) On the other hand, if you are currently in the crowd of the ungodly, move out of the crowd.  “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:17-18) Leave the world behind. Step ahead of the ignorant people and reach forth to the beckoning hands of the Savior today. Move forward to catch up with your salvation.

Prayer:  O Lord quicken my spirit to respond to the impulses of Holy Spirit and yield to your forward march in my Christian life journey on earth so that I can partake in the finished work of the Cross, in Jesus name, Amen
