Prepared For the Master’s Need

Jesus sent two of them on ahead. “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks, ‘What are you doing?’ just say, The Lord needs it and will return it soon.’” (Mark 11:1-3)

I read this passage above recently and I was powerfully touched by the detail of the gem of the power of the word God in the passage. Just about the close of the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth, when he was about to make a triumphant entry to the city of Jerusalem, He gave a directive to His disciple to make available a dignified mode of transportation that befitted the King of kings during His time. The specificity of His directive was amazing and wonderful.  The glorious attribute of omniscience which is exclusively belongs unto God was vivid in the directive.  He specifically described donkey as young, was never rode by anyone, was tied to a stake at the entrance of the village. The All-knowing God told the disciples to untie the donkey and He prepared the disciples about the exact reactions they will experience when someone would challenge them. He gave them an authoritative statement, saying The Lord needs it.”  There was no previous arrangement nor negotiation with the owner of the donkey. The power of God and His authority over all creation was at work in this glorious directive.

Perhaps you are of the opinion that our Lord Jesus Christ should not have used the donkey without the permission from the owner. That is far from your thought. Our Lord Jesus Christ was neither sending His disciples to engage in stealing the donkey. The answer was there in His conversation with the disciples—The Lord needs it and will return it soon.”  This means the Lord God Almighty, the Creator of the whole universe, Who owns all things needed the donkey at that moment. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) Consider the immensely deep wisdom of All-wise God Almighty manifesting unparalleled wisdom and the precision of the fulfillment of 500 years past prophetic utterances in the mouth of His servant Prophet Zechariah to the fulfillment in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkeyriding on a donkey’s colt.” (Zechariah 9:9) Our Lord Jesus Christ is only demonstrating the fulfillment of the word God that was revealed in the Old Testament prophecy as it was manifesting vividly and physically in His ministry.

Gleaning through the prophesy Zechariah and the instruction of Jesus Christ to the disciples in the two Bible passages above, we can learn that:

  • According to the prophetic utterance of Zechariah and the fulfillment thereof, about 500 years ago before the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, the ass has been in the plan of God as part of the fulfillment of the ministry of Jesus Christ on earth.
  • Ass is an animal of burden. Jesus Christ is our burden bearer. Physically, He bore the Cross to the place of Golgota and spiritually, he bore the burden of our sins upon the Cross of Calvary.  This ass was the only instrument in the ministry of Jesus Christ that bear His burden—to be ridden on, as a means of befitting and dignified means of transportation in His time for His triumphant entry Jerusalem.
  • Like a virgin prepared and presented herself in purity and undefiled for marriage to her husband, the ass which was never ridden by anyone was unwittingly made ready for the master’s use. One can behold the necessity of the precepts of sanctification and consecration in our services to the Lord.

Unlike human being, this ass that was not created in the glorious image of God, yet it has an important role to play in the ministry of Jesus Christ.  Has it ever occurred to you that God had invested a lot in your life through the grace of breathe of life He endowed you?  He nurtures and watches over you to keep you safe and sound. He endows you with good health and equip you with a measure of wisdom to excel on earth. Above all, He redeemed you with His precious blood in Salvation. Have you ever thought that you are here on earth in the plan of God for an important purpose for the glory of God? On your knees you can fit in perfectly to the plan of God in intercessory ministry. If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” (Ezekiel 22:30) Your mouth can be prepared to become a mouthpiece for Christ to speak salvation to the erring sinners. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19) Your hands can be dedicated to extending the love of God to humanity.  Your legs can walk in the footprint of Christ for the dissemination of the message of the gospel. “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9) The ass did not miss its prepared moment of need, it fitted perfectly at the appropriate moment for the glory of God. All the patriarchs were ready when the Lord needed them. All the prophets in the scripture were ready at the point of their callings. Each of the apostles of Jesus Christ were ready when the Master needed them. Peter did not miss the moment when Christ said, “I will make you fisher of men.” I pray that you will be ready at that very moment of need in your life for the glory of God. You will not miss your planned glorious moment for the King of Glory in Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer: Merciful Father, thank you Lord for your precious investment in my life. Teach my heart O Merciful Father to appreciate your plans and purposes concerning my life.  Grant me the grace to readily make myself available for your glorious use in Jesus name, Amen.
