Before you say, “What a silly question!” take time to read this piece. In order to be able to understand what bondage is, we looked up the dictionary meaning of the word ‘bondage.’ It includes slavery or involuntary servitude; the state of being bound or subjected to some external power or control, the state or practice of being physically restrained, as by being tied up, chained, or put in handcuffs and lastly, it includes personal or voluntary subjection of oneself to the control of an unknown superior power within.

When we are talking about bondage, the first thing that comes to mind are the people that are subjected to the horrible experience of slavery. Being in bondage cannot be narrowed to the people in captivity alone because there are so many things that are imprisoning and restraining mankind today. If being in bondage was only limited to physical restraint by chains or slavery, then the moment all the physical restraints are taken away, the person will regain his or her freedom. If the bondage experience is a state of being subjected to some external power of control, or if it is voluntary subjection of oneself to the control of a superior power, then this issue needs a serious reconsideration. Bondage is like a little fox. If it is not taken care of at the right time, it can destroy the entire barn.

Some are under the imprisonment of their own minds. It is their mind that restrains them and ensures that they could not use their God-given grace to do something worthy, righteous and holy to improve upon their lives. There is no way you can convince the people that they are under bondage. They are so bound to their chains, that they are convinced that their experiences are normal and right. These type of people are engaged in self-destructive habits like alcoholism and drug addiction and self-defiling habits like prostitution. Alcoholism and drug addictions are not medicinal. None of these two cravings are rich in vitamins. Their usage is more of a burden, inconveniences and destruction. Yet consistently, some people engage in the destructive drugs as if their lives depends on it.

In the present day of internet super-highway, many spend hours surfing social media programs like Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, watching pornographic video clips thereby sacrificing their quality sleeping time and devote their mind in total subjection to those things that are not physically beneficial and also not spiritually edifying to the individual. They locked themselves up in the imprisonment of social immoralities and sinfulness. This is one of the clear example of the imprisonment of mind in our generation.

The love of money made some people to become servant of mammon. They misuse their body to become couriers of hard drugs for a fee. Either by ingestion or other means to transport the drug from one country to the other. By so doing they became a slaves to their lust of getting money at all cost. There is no way you can convince the people that they are under bondage. They would say they are only making efforts to make money. Even if you remind them that their self-destructive habit can bring untimely death or deadly diseases upon them, they will quickly reply saying, everybody will die of something.

Tattooing is very popular in our day and it is a multi-billion-dollar business in America. They call it a work of art. But this display of artistic work is not done in the museum. Instead it was done on the body of individuals who will pay an exorbitant fee for the work of art of the artist to be displayed on him permanently. This thereby puts the individual into the perpetual bondage of being the drawing board of the tattoo artist, bearing black, red or blue tattoo inks injected to the body of the person forever. It comes to a point whereby the bodily appearance of the person becomes ugly and irritating. But by that point, it is no longer removable. The Creator had foreseen this ahead of time and had sternly commanded us against it. “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28 NIV) The question is, “Are we obeying the commandment of God to avoid this perpetual bondage?

A compulsive gambler who wasted his life savings in the casino slot machines does not believe that he is in the bondage of a devouring evil spirit. His quest was to win back all that he had lost. He will play with his last dollar or even bet with every valuable properties on him, all the way down to something like his coat and shoes until finally he will be thrown out of the gaming hotel.

A violent angry man did not know that he is in bondage until his overwhelming anger led him to snuff out the life of another person. At that horrible moment, his eyes will be suddenly clear and he would blame his reckless actions upon the devil—the default evil doer.

The bondage of some is obsessive eating. They eat and eat and eat until it will begin to affect their health. They say they are eating away their sorrows. In medical terminology they call this habit eating disorder, but the spiritual diagnosis of this problem is being in the prison on one’s own mind.

Some so called servants of God are deliberately distorting and misinterpreting the word of God in order to manipulate the minds of people for the ulterior motive of enriching their pockets. These evil servants do not realize that they are in the bondage of false prophecy. Unknowingly, the people that listen to false prophets are also in bondage. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1) “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matthew 7:15,20)

The archenemy of man had put mankind in a perpetual bondage of sin right from the beginning in the Garden of Eden. At the same time the antidote, the provision of deliverance, has been declared through the mercy of God to deliver us from our bondage. “Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” (Roman 8:21) The Lord God Almighty was faithful concerning His word to deliver the Israelites from the bondage of their taskmaster in Egypt. “Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptian.” (Exodus 6:6-7) All the miraculous deeds of deliverance of the Israelites from the land of Egypt are pointing us to understand that there is salvation in the Lord God Almighty. Perhaps we need to look inward today and consider whether there exists any bondage in our characters, in our habits, in our minds and in our lives. We need to sum up courage to take the problem to the Lord in prayer. He will surely honor His word, answer us and deliver us from all the bondage of our lives.

Prayer: O Lord, I hold to the horn of your salvation today, deliver me from all the physical and spiritual bondage that are plaguing my life. Merciful Father, deliver me from the unknown superior forces that subject me to the imprisonment of my mind in Jesus name. Let the power of your word be able to make me free, that I may be free indeed, in Jesus name, Amen.
