The Power of Sound

There are certain important things that God made at the beginning, that were not specifically mentioned in the scripture. They are real but they are invisible. They seemed to be unnoticed but continue to coexist with other marvelous creation of God and continue to play various important roles on earth. Some of these wonderful creations like ‘sound,’ ‘air’ and ‘wave’ became more appreciated through various science discovery. Through science man discovered that sound travels at a specific speed of about 1,126 feet per second. The electro-magnetic wave length that is very useful in the electronic world was discovered. The sea wave could be determined and managed to the advantage of humanity. The volume of air in an enclosure could be measured and put to use for the benefit of mankind.

Today, we will focus our discussion on the invisible creature called sound. From the musical instruments like piano and guitar we understand and appreciate the usefulness of sound. Strike the cord of guitar or the keyboard of a piano you will hear a distinctive musical note. From the various musical notes we get from these two musical instruments, we further classified them to eight distinct universal musical notes—do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do. Sound may emanate naturally on its own by the cause of action of the nature. The fierce thundering sound of lightening ushers in rain and the pounding wave of sea reveals the awesome power of God in the great water.  Each of the living creatures make different sounds. The leaves on the trees make rustling sound. The singing birds on the trees make shrimping sharp notes. Wherever you are, even in the quiet neighborhood, there is always a distinctive sound out there that you can hear intermittently.

Children begin language by making sound.  From da-da-da and ma-ma-ma they get to perfect the pronunciation of ‘daddy’ and ‘mammy.’ In their attempts to mimic the sounds they pick from their parents they learn their mother tongues. In each tribe all over the world, the unique specific sounds we produce when speaking forms the content of the words of the different languages of the world.

One of the wonderful thing to note about sound is that it is one of the active things created by God. In most cases, one can identify the object that is making a certain sound. Sound always announce the current events that is going on around us. The lub-dub-lub-dub-lub-dub sound of our heart is announcing that we are still alive. Sound from radio or the television in our sitting room broadcasts the current events in our cities. When people are traveling by air around us, the still-thundering sound of the aircraft will announce it. The constant moving motor vehicles traffic has its own sound.

Sounds always command attention. If there is a sound of shooting in the street, every ear will be attentive to the direction, waiting for the next sound that will announce the occurrence. The sound of sorrow always manifest in the blend of teary cry of anguish and intermittent sigh and silence. On the other hands there is a fun-fare sound of joy that always manifest in the blending of colorful parade music, dancing and laughter. The artistic excellence of a drummer is not revealed in the beautiful appearance of the drum and the drummer but from the unique rhythm and danceable sound of the drum. The Nigerian talking-drum does not only give rhythmic sound, it also communicates a unique language to the local people who understand the language of the drummer.

The piercing siren sound of the police or fire trucks in our street usually sounds a note of warning of the ongoing and unpleasant occurrence of fire incidence or an active crime incidence. The siren sound may be an indication of the presence of strange intruding jet bomber entering the sensitive no-fly zone air space of a nation. Apart from the regular loud sound of siren from the nearest military depot, in the modern day, the emergency siren sounds directly from our cell phones nationwide alerts people of the imminent danger of natural disasters like tornadoes or flood so that people may prepare to run for safety and seek refuge.

When the war ends, it is the sound of joy that conveys the message of peace and victory to the community. “When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres. As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” (1 Samuel 18:6-7) With sounds of musical instruments people would take to the street singing and dancing to celebrate victory and peace that the war had eventually ended.

Amazingly the sound of the utterances of God began the creation of the whole universe, when God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) In the same manner, sound will declare the end of time. “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:30-31) Sound blasting from the trumpet of the angels will declare the end of time. Every ear will hear the sound of the trumpet. “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” (1 Corinthians 15:52)

Beloved, one of the most difficult thing to predict is the type of tiding that the next sound will bring. My prayer is that we shall all hear the sound of joy, peace and glad tidings. Having this at the back of our minds, through the grace of salvation that had been extended to us by faith, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God,” (Ephesians 2:8) let us draw nearer unto the Creator who created the sound so that we can abide in the canopy of His love and His protection. Whatever may be the tiding of the next sound will no longer be terrifying to us because our mind will be insulated in the confidence of His word.

Prayer:  O Lord, when you call me by my name, let me be able to hear the sound of your voice and yield in response to come unto you to do your bidding in Jesus name, Amen.
