Power of Spoken Words

At creation, God the Creator did not pray to anyone, He spoke the  whole universe into existence. He said, “Let there be light,” and the awesome light appeared. That was the beginning and that was how everything that were created came to existence by the utterances of His glorious tongue.

During the state of pandemonium among the people of God at the shore of Red Sea, when the Egyptians finest warriors were pursuing the Israelites, Moses stood in the presence of the Israelites and said, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace. (Exodus 14:13-14) The Lord God Almighty intervened in the situation.  He commanded Moses to use the rod in his hand to divide the Red Sea. “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided.” (Exodus 14:21)

The same grace of power of creation through the spoken words was extended to Moses when the Israelites were thirsty at the Wilderness of Zin. “Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. (Numbers 20:8) Although Moses disappointed God, instead of speaking to the rock, he struck the rock. Water gush out and the people drank but Moses only succeeded in using the old solution to solve the new problems. About thirty-eight years ago, in the same Wilderness of Sin, God told him to strike the rock. Exodus 17:6 “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.”  And the consequence of his failure to obey the exact commandment of God brought an end to his ministry.

At the crossroad in the ministry of Joshua, when he was in the battle front with the Amorites, he approached the throne of grace in prayer in the presence of Israelites, “Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge upon their enemies.” (Joshua 10:12-13)

God told Ezekiel to prophesy upon the dry bone in the Valley of Dry Bone. Ezekiel 37:4-6 Ezekiel followed the commandments of God, dry bones began to locate each other, they joined together, and sinew covered them. God spoke to Ezekiel the second time to prophesy upon the slain bodies in the valley that breathe of life may come into them. “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.” (Ezekiel 37:9) Ezekiel prophesied upon the bodies, and they were quickened and became living souls.

Peter spoke to the situation of the lame man at the gate called Beautiful, saying, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.” (Acts 3:6)  Immediately the lame man stood up and began to walk.  The spiritual precedence had been laid through the servants of God mentioned above. The power of creation through the spoken words had been given unto believers. Have we ever wondered why God admonished us to pray? “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:14-15) Our Heavenly Father is omniscience God who knows all our needs before we even open our mouth. But He wants us to pray in order to customize and shape our needs according to our own brand of desires with the power of tongue He had given unto us. This is the way our Father in Heaven is teaching us the precept of sense of belonging because the extraordinary miracles we received as an answer to our prayer will enhance extraordinary praises and testimonies in our appreciation when we worship Him.

We should therefore stand faithfully in the revelation of the word of God and apply the grace of prayer for the glory of God and for the benefit of humanity. We must learn how to speak healing to our ailing land. We must stand in gap in prayer that God may avert disasters that our plaguing our nations. We should seek the face of God that righteousness and holiness may prevail in our land. This grace must not be taken for granted and that is why believers must be extremely careful with what we say with our mouths because the book of Proverbs 18:21 warned us that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”

Prayer: Merciful Father, I praise your Holy name for the grace of spoken word to the situations around me. Let me faithfully apply this grace in terms of prayer and positive confession and receive the desired result in Jesus name, Amen
