A Right Winning Attitude

[1]Years ago, Zig Ziglar declared, “It is your attitude, more than your aptitude, that will determine your altitude.” In order to understand the word “winning’ in this context, Ziglar gave a contrasting review between winners and losers to explain the meaning.  He said,

  • The winner is always a part of the answer. The loser is always a part of the problem.
  • The winner always has a plan. The loser always has an excuse.
  • The winner says, “Let me help you.” The loser says, “That’s not my job.”
  • The winner sees an answer for every problem. The loser sees a problem in every answer.
  • The winner says, “It may be difficult, but it’s possible.” The loser says, “It may be possible, but it’s too difficult.”

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.” (2 Kings 4:8-10)

The account of the Shunammite woman in the Bible passage above demonstrated the right winning attitude expected of any triumphant believer. A winning child of God is always a part of the purpose of God.  There is always an opportunity opened to do good, a believer with winning attitude will not miss the opportunity. That was why the Shunammite woman constrained Prophet Elisha, a man of God persuasively so that she could extend hospitality unto him. She was doing all these without expecting anything in return.

Right winning attitude believers always have plan to do good to other.  It was said of our Lord Jesus Christ the He was going about doing good to all. “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38) No one spoke to the Shunammite woman on behalf of this Prophet.  She willingly devise a plan, in a Christlike right attitude of kindness, to be a blessing to the man of God. She said to her husband, let us renovate a portion of our house, put a bed in a room, table and stool there as well as a candlestick so that when the man of God passing by he may stay there. She was not obligated to do so but she did it because of her right attitude within. Little did she knew that, “He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.” (Mark 10:41)

Along the line, the man of God was overwhelmed and touched with the act of kindness of the Shunammite woman. He called her, and asked her: What do you want me to do for you?  Should I speak of you to the King of the nation? She replied, “I dwell among my people.” This is an eastern way of saying, “I am a well to do person, I do not need anything.” Yet the man of God will not give up. He asked his servant, Gehazi. “I observed that she has no child and her husband is old, Gehazi said. The Prophet call the woman again and said to her, “About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son.” (2 Kings 4:16)  At the appointed time, the word of blessing from the mouth of the Prophet came to pass. The woman had a son. You can imagine the joy that must have filled her heart.

One day this child suddenly fell sick and died in the hand of the Shunammite woman. In her sorrow and mournful devastation, she carried the dead child and place him on the bed of the man of God. She saddle an ass and told her husband that she is going to see the man of God.  Her husband asked, what was the matter? “And she said, It shall be well.” (2 Kings 4:23) A right attitude winner always see solution to situational problem. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. . . . But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:1,6) Throughout her journey to see the man of God, she responded to every one she met on her way, “It is well.” She never utter a negative statement nor tell anyone about her situation. At last she came to the man of God and told him that her child had died. The man of God passionately and persistently sought the face of God and the dead child was restored to life again. And it was well with her and her family according to her faithful convictions.

A right winning attitude person will not let his or her blessing slips away. A non-believing Syrophoenician woman came to see Jesus Christ pleading before Him for mercy that He might heal her daughter. “But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs. And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.” (Mark 7:27-29)  She was not pissed off like the worldly people and there was no angry retort to the testy statement of Jesus Christ. In a right attitude she approached our Lord Jesus Christ with a humble response, suggesting that she does not mind to settle for the crumbs of the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. She knew that the prototypes of Christ miraculous power is contained in all the crumps that fall from the Master Jesus’ table of mercy.  Of course she got her miracle because of her right winning attitude

A right attitude person sees with the eyes of faith, perceives with the mind of faith, and receives his or her blessing with the hands of faith before the manifestation. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (Hebrews 11:1-3 NIV) A right attitude person totally and wholly trust God for His divine ability and the absolute performance of His word. A right attitude person always surrender and trust the outcome of a situation into the hand of God. The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:33 ESV) An aptitude may elevates you to the highest point in the envious ladder of life, but only a right attitude within in the wisdom of God will keep you and sustain you there excellently. Depend on God in a right attitude and see yourself reaching the mountain top of your glorious life vision.

Prayer: O Lord, I beseech you this day, grant me the grace to cash in on the opportunity to do good unto humanity. O God, enlighten my mind in your understanding and endow me with a right attitude within in my daily life so that I can apply my life to your wisdom, to fully trust in your ability and confidently wait in the assurance of your faithfulness in the course of the journey of my life on earth, in Jesus name, Amen.
