The phrase ‘hang-in there’ is a persuasive statement to encourage someone that is going through a tough time to remain persistent and determined in the face of the difficult circumstances. No one admonishes an individual that is relishing in a fabulous enjoyment to hang-in there.  It is only the people that are going through a devastating event that receive the persuasive admonition to hang in there. Far from the popular thought, it is not only the bad people that experience unpleasant occurrences; bad and unpleasant things at times do happen to good people.  Certainly the calamities that are common to humanity will surely befall one person in the community.  Different people face different issues but one thing is certain, the problem that started at a certain day will surely end at one future day.  That is why people generally offer a persuasive word of encouragement during our painful experiences in life to hang-in there.

Perhaps you have not fully grasp the meaning of the phrase: a scenario where a mountaineer was about a half-way up on a very high mountain, and all of a sudden, the rope snapped from the rock at that very moment when she wants to climb a step further up and she is now hanging precariously on her fingers firmly gripped to the rock. Perhaps the rock already tore the fingers and she is now bleeding profusely.

Joseph found himself in this situation in the journey of his life.  Apart from the fact that he was a victim of a household enemy in the hands of those who were created together in the wisdom of God to love each other as a family, his blood related brothers threw him into a dry pit and was later sold into slavery to the Egyptians travelers.  Joseph’s supposedly beloved brothers went home to report to their father, Jacob that a wild animal had killed Joseph their brother. So many years of Joseph’s servitude in the house of Potiphar that witnessed abundance of blessing to the household because of the mighty hand of God was upon Joseph was not enough for the slave master. He eventually sent him to prison because of the false accusation of his unfaithful wife who tried to seduce Joseph and lured him to commit sin.  “But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:8-9) However, the Lord God Almighty intervened and endowed Joseph uncommon ability to interpret the dream of the king. This remarkable feat earned him a promotion to become the Prime Minister in Egypt. He hung in there till the end of his trial.  The Lord did not put him to shame. The beauty of Joseph character was that he did not allow embitterness of the wickedness of his brethren to dwell with him forever. He forgave them and did everything to reunite the entire family.

Job hung-in there throughout the enhanced attack of the arch-enemy of man, Satan.  Job, a servant of God and an extra-ordinary wealthy man of the east lost all his wealth, his children and all that were precious to him in one day in one swift and violent attack of enemy.  But he hung-in there still with the heart of appreciation unto Almighty God that gives all blessing regardless of the calamity.  He bowed down unto God and worshiped Him saying,Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” (Job 1:21)  As if this was not enough, the enemy once again attacked him with disease. Painful boils blisters covered his body. His wife even told him to curse God and die, but Job hung-in there he did not yield to the evil suggestion of his wife.  His three friends, popularly known as the miserable comforters insisted that Job was a sinner and that was why the calamitous situations occurred to him.  But instead of despair and down casting, in the midst of his anguish, Job declared faithfully,For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God” (Job 19:25-26)  Job once again stuck unto his God waiting for His divine intervention. The Heavenly Father did not put Job to shame, at the appointed time His mercy returned unto Job. For all his troubles God gave him double of everything he had lost. “And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, … also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.” (Job 42:10)

Whatever may be the unpleasant situation that you found yourself now, they are not hidden unto God. The Lord knew that you have capacity to bear these light afflictions. Perhaps you are wondering why He did not prevent the affliction, He did not because it may be your stepping stone to greatness. “… there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9) That is why He had endowed you with the endurance and grace to bear the ordeal.  “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13) He knew the beginning of your afflictions and will surely take you through it victoriously and will return all your captivities unto you the way He returned the captivities of Joseph and Job with uncommon blessings. Therefore beloved, hang-in there in the grace of the Lord. Wait for the Lord to behold His glory after the temporary affliction. You will discover that your waiting is not in vain.

Prayer: O Lord, I thank You for the grace of trusting in your faithfulness.  As I am hanging in there in all the ordeals of my life, Merciful Father, remember your compassion and mercy.  In your faithfulness endow me with your grace in the moment of my anguish. As you returned the captivities of Joseph and Job in your faithfulness, remember me in your mercy and return my captivities and promote me with abundant of your blessings, in Jesus name, Amen
