Growing up from the farm background, when I was young, we always expressed how big our father’s farms was by the wide stretching of our arms. We were so little in stature, in knowledge and understanding then. We did not know how to count number in units of the yearly output bags of corns, nor did we know the number of tuber of yams harvested in our father’s farm. We did not know how to measure the size of our father’s farm in terms acres and hectares. We did not even know the length and breadth of our hut in the farm. We just relished that the farm land of our father was big and we expressed it by the stretching of our arms.
The rich and wealthy men on earth are measured by the numerical value of the monetary assets in their bank accounts. They are measured by the value of their real estates assets both valuable and other invaluable assets. The powerful people are measured by their dominions and authorities they command in their territories. The powerful nations are measured by the monetary value of the asset of the nation, the strength of the nations’ gross national products (GNP) and the strength of their military, their military arsenals, their sophisticated weapons of war, and the vast numerical population of the citizen of the nation.
God Almighty is the Creator of both Heaven and earth. Have you ever wonder what could be the size of our Heavenly Father, Almighty God? Many, I believe, would have thought about this. But the question for our consideration is, “What exactly are we trying to measure in terms of size in Almighty God? Are we interested to know about His height, or is it about His weight? Or perhaps those two may not interest us. Are we considering the size of His wisdom? Or is it how far He can see or how far His hands can reach? Perhaps we should not even go near that because the scripture told in Isaiah 40:28 which says “Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.” (NLT) Or is it His hands that we want to measure? The scripture reminded us in Deuteronomy 26:8 that “the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders.”
Perhaps we are wondering how mighty the hand of God is, the question that Isaiah 40:12 asked us will give us an idea. “Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?” We learnt that Mariana trench the deepest depth of the sea is about 35000 feet deep, and scripture tells us that God measure the depth of the sea in the hollow of his hand. Whao! The mountains are measures in scales. And this include Mount Everest and other high mountains. Think about the scale of God that can measure Mount Everest and other high mountains all over the world! “Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.” ( Isaiah 40:15) That includes great and powerful nations that readily comes to mind as we are considering this thought. These nations are all like a drop of a bucket and they are counted as the small dust of the balance. No wonder the scripture enlightens us further saying, “Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool…” (Isaiah 61:1) But wait a minute! This passage, is perhaps suggesting that the earth is one of the glorious furniture in the sitting room of Almighty God because the earth is God’s footstool. Awesome! With this at the back of our mind, we can imagine how mighty God Almighty is!
Or are we trying to measure His eyes? The scripture also remind us that, [God is] “Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” No optometrist can measure the sharpness of the eyes of Almighty God. Twenty-twenty sharpness of eyes measurement of man is not comparable to the quality of sharpness of the eyes of Almighty God. He is the Creator that gives eyes to all creatures and enhance their ability to see.
We always behold the awesomeness of the glory of God when we see the beauty of the heavenly bodies. The sun had never failed to rise in the east at the early hours of the mornings and never fail to set in the west in the evenings. Moon and starry host had never failed to decorate the sky with the amazing scintillating beauty and friendly cool lights in the night. The consistent functions of the heavenly bodies at the right appointed time for them as well as the appointed time for all the four seasons of the year (summer, fall, winter and spring) demonstrates the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father who established them by His divine ordinances.
If we can measure the length and breath of the planet earth and the structure of the foundation that it is standing on. If we know the magnitude of the expanse of heaven and if we can measure the length and breath thereof then, maybe we can measure the size of the Living God. I am fully persuaded that no man possess the knowledge and ability to measure these immeasurables.
Perhaps it is wise we shelf the idea of measuring the size of our Heavenly Father, because Job could not answer three questions that God asked him. “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. ‘Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?’ ‘Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof? “‘ (Job 38:4-6) Job could not fathom God’s unparalleled wisdom, immeasurable abilities. His awesome power, compassion and infinite mercy is beyond the limit of our limited mind and understanding. It is better we continue to perceive Him and imagine Him in His awesome glory. We should continue to relish in the awesome grace of His love that He had bestow upon us instead of attempting to measure the Immeasurable and Unsearchable Almighty God.
Prayer: O Lord, enlighten my heart with your understanding and wisdom; please grant me the grace to know you the more and cause me to appreciate your abundant grace, your mercy and your love, in Jesus name. Let me continue to relish in your immeasurable power, awesome abilities, infinite mercy and compassion, in Jesus name, Amen.
